it’s a really nice gesture america!

how …

it’s a really nice gesture america!

but how many of these hands were on steering wheels just prior to being across the sand?

how many gallons of oil were purchased from bp or their affiliates to get all of those lovely and caring hands from their homes to the beach?
i am guessing a lot…

there are many similar gestures going on right now, but how many people do you actually know who have decided to do something that could help? i’m not talking about sending money or holding hands or praying. i am talking about doing something that if done years ago could have prevented this terrible assault on our ocean all together.

i think it’s never to late. how about you?

what i am proposing is a little radical, a little extreme… but so simple! anyone can do it. anywhere. even in places where systems are not already in place, it can all be created relatively easily. you could be the very first on your block, and start your own mini revolution. how cool is that?

so what is this super plan that is going to stop the oil from gushing?

for starters, stop milking the earth of it’s precious insides. it’s not a cow. and for that matter, cows don’t deserve this type of abuse either. to be milked and milked until they bleed and bleed and bleed.

our mother earth deserves better. and there is only one thing to do.

i am talking about giving up your cars.

GASP!

yes, i said it.

and hey, while you are at it. give the rest of the animals a break. now that seafood is out, try to eat more grains and vegetables and fruit. please don’t replace your once a week fish dinner with another animal! that’s only going to upset the methane balance in our ecosystem. and do you really want to fuck with methane? petroleum is like the poppy to methane’s meth lab. toxic wasteland.

one thing at a time…
let’s start today by giving up the car!!
turn the roads into bike ways and pedestrian paths.
plant trees.
and enjoy every second.
! !! !!!

almost everyone i know is glued to the tube right now. watching the presidential debates. i am sure blood pressures are rising across the country, perhaps the world, as it watches a highlight in one of the biggest soap operas of all… the us political system.

i respect that this country is a melting pot, and it is something i have always appreciated… people from different places coming together to make one united group… i get it. but right now our melting pot is one with edges burnt to a crisp and it’s center is cold and raw.
seriously crisp.
seriously raw.

the raw represents naivity and youth.
the burnt bits are bitter and jaded… old and rich.
the space between the two is miniscule.
which represents a shrinking middle class.

now who wants to come over for fondue?

every year the city of berkeley celebrates it’s uniqueness with a parade and festival called “how berkeley can you be?” it’s a great day …

every year the city of berkeley celebrates it’s uniqueness with a parade and festival called “how berkeley can you be?” it’s a great day to witness all of the pecularities of the city and celebrate it’s originality and tolerance.
but recently, berkeley has not lived up to it’s own berkeleyness at all! for almost two years, the university had been battling a group of tree sitters who were trying to salvage a beautiful grouping of old growth trees from being cut down to build another sports related facility. my motto throughout the year has been “if you can’t save a tree in berkeley, where in hell can you?” seriously… this town is known for it’s political activism, forward thinking, green lifestyles, and intellegence! if you can’t save a tree from being cut down here, than the rest of the country is fucked!
well it finally happened last week. the last tree was cut down as helicopters circled above. private news company circled their helicopters above for days before the last tree hit the ground. it was tragic!
once again, money talked and the tree sitters, with their buckets of shit, walked.
the almighty dollar won over the mother earth. the university chose football (aka money) over nature.
the irony, of course is that the university spent well over the amount of money it would have taken to transplant the trees somewhere else, on litigation fees and lawyers. money down the drain. trees, dead on the ground. what a waste…
so i ask you… how berkeley CAN’T you be?

i am saddened by my recent discovery that an estimated 320 million trees were destroyed by hurricane katrina. 320 million!!! makes the 1,350 trees i planted this year seems like nothing. the world needs about 23,704 people like me just to replace those trees alone. upon wakening this morning, we saw the devastation of yet another great hurricane, ike. makes you wonder about all the tsunamis and monsoons around the world… and what affect they have upon our great symbiotic friends, the trees.
we have our work cut out for us people. as we all know by now, the planet’s loss of trees increases climate change… the storms are only going to get more severe, so we have to start planting our trees now!
please help.
http://www.treesftf.org/main.htm
gift a grove or finance a forest.

and what a spectacular month it shall be.
september is sometimes referred to as an “indian summer” here.
today i heard it called “summer for adults”.

i wondered… is it because while the kids are at school, mom and dad are doing cannon balls into the local neighborhood pool?
probably not, but they are definitely staying home and cooking less, and going out to restaurants more…
most homes here aren’t air conditioned, (a shocking thing to this native floridian) and no body wants to be inside cooking when it’s over 70 degrees outside.

the northern californians are a spoiled bunch, for sure.
but it sure does suit me.

no.

because i am an environmentalist, my diet reflects my commitment to preserving our planet. translated: i am a vegan with a vengeance!!! …

because i am an environmentalist, my diet reflects my commitment to preserving our planet. translated: i am a vegan with a vengeance!!! i would perfer that most food eaten be organic and be grown locally. i prefer the food be raw when it’s purchased, giving the choice to cook or process it… or not. as a californian, almonds are a great choice for a raw snack because not only are they packed with energy, alkalinity and nourishment, but they are also grown locally. however, due to a recent USDA ruling, all california almonds must now be pasturized, thus killing their wonderful natural enzymes. what is worse, is that they can still be labeled as “raw”. this is an outrage to me so i wrote united states senator dianne feinstein and here is what i got in response. enjoy.

Dear Mrs. Jones:

Thank you for writing to me regarding the pasteurization of almonds. I appreciate hearing from you on this issue and welcome the opportunity to respond.

California leads the nation in almond production, harvesting over $2.3 billion worth of nuts in 2005. Of that amount, $1.8 billion in almonds were exported, making almonds our State’s largest exported commodity. I understand contamination of almonds could have devastating effects on consumers worldwide and the almond industry. However, I also recognize the techniques, including pasteurization, aimed at reducing potential contamination of almonds raise concerns, and I appreciate you contacting me with your thoughts.

In response to Salmonella contamination of almonds in the last several years, the Almond Board of California proposed a program in August, 2006 under the California almond marketing order to reduce the potential for a bacteria outbreak in almonds. Under this program, the majority of handlers must subject their almonds to a process that decreases bacteria by a factor of 10,000 prior to shipment. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved this rule on March 31, 2007 and implementation began on September 1, 2007.

I have noted your concerns regarding the pasteurization of almonds and the USDA’s approval of this program. I also understand your concerns about labeling and the importance of allowing consumers to make informed decisions. Please know that it is very helpful for me to receive your input, and, and I will keep your thoughts in mind should the Senate consider any relevant legislation in the future.

Again, thank you for writing. Should you have any further questions or comments, please feel free to contact my Washington, D.C. office at (202) 224-3841. Best regards.

Sincerely yours,
Dianne Feinstein
United States Senator”

written like a true politician!!!

While giving a talk at the Heritage Foundation on November 1, George Bush said:

“I ask Congress to send me a clean veterans funding bill by Veterans Day; and to pass a clean defense spending bill. Congress needs to put the needs of those who put on the uniform ahead of their desire to spend more money. When it comes to funding our troops, some in Washington should spend more time responding to the warnings of terrorists like Osama bin Laden and the requests of our commanders on the ground, and less time responding to the demands of MoveOn.org bloggers and Code Pink protesters. (Applause.) ”

a revolution in the first act

in order to even find the time for activism, i believe the first step is to stop being consumed with consumption! for this, i recommend reading “culture jam” (find out more @ http://www.adbusters.org/). and while you’re on the adbusters website, you might as well pick up a subscription to their brilliant magazine. you can thank me later.

so once the t.v. is off and you have stopped wasting all that time being advertised to, your mind will start to crave information. the television used to fill that void in your life, and without it, you will be thirsty for knowledge. a great place to start catching up on current events is truthout.org. while at times i feel myself slightly overwhelmed with information on their site, the alternative (being uninformed) is not appealing at all. so read up… information is power.

oh and since all this information is sure to get you feeling a little agitated, perhaps even irate, be sure to remember to even things out a little with some humor in your life. today’s pick: a hilarious video about a vegan with a healthy appetite. “stuff yourself like an omnivore!” http://youtube.com/watch?v=T6N3xkDjrkk

if you still need to do some unwinding after that, it sounds like you need some carl sagonomics in your life! listen to R. Heron of Alexandria by A Low Cost Affordable Heating Plan @ http://robots.bandcamp.com/

enjoy!
